About Richard
Richard migrated from Kingston Jamaica to England in 1964 and initially lived in Northampton before settling in London a decade later. In London, Richard had a few jobs in the car motor industry before working in various positions for a train operating company eventually completing 22 years service with them. Richard’s first love is Art. He enjoys painting in his spare time. After working for a Local Authority for some 10 years as a Principal Officer and a brief spell with an NHS Trust, Richard now works for a well-known Housing Association in Complaints Management.
Richard had four children: Rolan, Nathan, Lauren and Shanice. However, in 1991 his sons were brutally attacked in Thamesmead by a racist gang, sadly Rolan did not survive the attack and died during the attack. Since then Richard and his wife, Audrey, have campaigned tirelessly to bring about justice for their sons, and other victims of racial violence, discrimination and injustice.
Throughout the past 20 years Richard has campaigned alongside victims, families, friends and supporters of those who have and continue to suffer racial violence and injustice such as: Brian Moore, Satpal Ram, Cardiff Three, Ruhullah Aramesh, Rohit Duggal, Stephen Lawrence, Duwayne Brooks, Orville Blair, M25 Three.
In his endeavour to help bring about community cohesion and civic engagement among Minority Communities, Richard has worked in the Third and Public Sectors as a Community Researcher and Community Activist. The issues he has been involved in included, civic engagement, social exclusion, racism and other forms of discrimination, Research and Development
Richard has a wide range of interests and in 2006 Richard decided to undertake a degree course. In 2011 he graduated witha BSc (Open) degree in the Social Sciences and Archaeology. He is a Schools Admission Appeal Panel Member and enjoys swimming, travelling and as well as painting in water, oil and acrylic colours, Richard is also a dab-hand at DIY.
